An Appointment with the Subconscious

Based on the Rorschach ink blot tests, these images question ways of seeing beauty and femininity in the patterns of hair texture/ styling belonging to women of the black diaspora.

The investigative nature of this project also seeks to demonstrate the psychological implications of binary representation within media imagery, and their sociological effects on the identities that are portrayed. The titles of each image are polysemous; they describe the hairstyle, but are also words representative of the respectability politics shrouding afro-centric hairstyling and the resultant expectations of demeanour.

This project was featured by Fresh Film Productions Ltd as part of the #SheTakesOver campaign for International Womxn’s Day 2021.

The campaign aims to annually highlight womxn in the creative industries across the month of March, with 2021’s theme asking what we #ChooseToChallenge in our creative fields.

Campaign partners also include: Adam & Everywhere DDB, Equal Lens, Free The Work, Clear Channel UK and the Alliance for Women Film Composers.
